Has anyone ever used a fake reference when interviewing or used a fake reference company for getting a job in Austin? I just got laid off from another company that merged so I don't want to bother friends and co-workers with being my reference again so I'm looking to hire a company or strangers to do this for me. Any advice?

More evidence that we need a minimum post count before new users can start their own threads.

No, I'm sure no one has ever done that.

Just a hint: I. P. Freely is a lousy fake reference name.

I have done this, having used a fake reference company, albeit not in the Austin area. It worked.

Not sure if the company checked or not, but i had to lie in my interview, and once proven i was good enough for the job i never worried about it again.

I thought to myself, what was better being unemployed and broke, or faking it and making some money?

We do check references and would not hire anyone that used a fake reference.

Sounds like a terrible idea and shows a complete lack of integrity.

This post would prevent me from hiring the original OP, if there was any reasonable way to be reasonably certain I had tied that post to the person applying.

Employers often now search the web to get a clue about their potential employees.

Not worth it. Yes, they check.

Yes and yes they work if you're careful about it.

For those unfamiliar with these services they provide a local number with someone on call that will lie about being your past employer, about how great you are, etc. They'll even set up an authentic looking dummy website for the entity that you are lying about having worked for.
