For your first job, they might look at your overall GPA. Maybe. They'll never look at your individual transcripts. After your first job, no one will ever care about your grades in college.
It all depends where you apply. Many of the jobs I see online for high level, senior managers (happens to be government) in specific fields ask for detailed course information. They don't always ask for grades, just the credit received (including whether semester or quarter units), but sometimes a prospective employee is required to include a copy of their university transcript/s.
These are not entry-level jobs. They pay over $100,000.
so to be clear, do you mean they don't care about my overall GPA(could mean that the D still sticks out like a sore thumb) or don't care about grades at all?
Employers don't care about grades unless if it's for an internship. Most people don't memorize their GPA's like their phone number or address. I still don't even remember my high school GPA.
Then you've never screened and hired new grads in high tech.
I skim the transcript looking for bad grades. A bad grade on any course in their major is pretty much an automatic rejection. I'd probably reject any transcript with a D unless it was their Freshman year and they had strong grades afterwards. If I have a stack of 50 candidates, why would I bother with the one who gave up on a course and got a D when I have a couple dozen transcripts with all A's and B's? They're going to do the same thing at work when they get assigned something they hate or something they struggle with.
Some people get D's in college because they were not interested in the class they had to take, but they had to because their college made them.
Maybe for internships but they would look at overall GPA not the grade in one class. I definitely have never had employers ask me for my gpa, or ACT scores. I have never heard of employers pulling high school transcripts or standardized test scores from high school. In my experience, a "high tech" employer is more concerned with your certifications and technical knowledge and whether or not you have a degree as opposed to your GPA, transcripts for every semester, high school GPA, and ACT/SAT scores. But I'm not applying to work on Wall Street for $200K a year so I guess I may as well be a convenience store manager or some such nonsense.

This never happens in the private sector. I have never heard of a senior manager having to provide course transcripts. It is 100% about experience.
Human Resources care more about the school you attended, your interview and your previous work experience. At your first job, you won't have much experience, so you put your GPA on. they never check your transcripts. After my first job, I never put my GPA on my resume anymore. Nobody cares. They do care that I attended and graduated Wharton tho. ;-D

So I'm a hiring manager. I know I'm going to be handing some really lousy scutt work out to anybody I hire because we all get distasteful things thrown at us on the job. Why should I hire somebody who says they got a D in a course because their school made them take it? That's exactly how they're going to behave when I ask them to do something on the job that nobody wants to do.
If I hear the "unique snowflake" defense for lousy grades, I hire somebody else. It's a job. We all do things we hate doing.

Yep. Transcripts are a new grad thing, or at least for someone with less than 2 years working in their field. My first tech employer wanted transcripts and SAT scores.

I agree with you that is a stupid excuse but the question is will you really ask him/her about the "D"?
