What factors into the salary that is reported on a background check, such as from HireRight? Does it originate from W2 which includes bonus and overtime or do they contact past employer for base salary?

In the last three years I made 15%, then 40% and last year 60% of base pay in overtime pay. What do I state if I'm required to report salary for background check?

My profession is usually not eligible for overtime, and a future employer would not pay it, but my current employer pays for overtime.

My past employer reports to EnVerify for background checks. They reported straight salary, no bonus info.

Why would your current employer report your salary to background check agencies, where future employers could gather this info? Seems intrusive at best, but possibly a breach of confidentiality. Not only that, but what advantage do they have to share this? Why would they want to have other employers be able to access such data?

I thought the only company that aggregates salary information is Theworknumber. They will not give out salary information unless the subject goes to their site, gets a request number, and then provides that number to the entity verifying. The IRS is even more restrictive and unless you are a candidate for office or requesting a clearance they won't release the information.

Salary data except for govt employees is sensitive and private information. Any company just giving it out to anyone who want to know is going to get sued. Heck I could just call up and ask what my coworker is making and then if he/she is making more scream at the boss for a raise.

That is why companies have started hounding candidates to provide them with paystubs and w-2's. It is sensitive information and they really have no right to know but are bullying candidates for it anyways to low-ball them on salary. I fully advocate lying to them and faking the w-2/paystub. Deplorable behavior by companies.

Absolutely. And let us be quite real here for a minute: all these employers already have a budget so they KNOW the range, if not exact figure they will pay you. So why for eff's sake play these games? In Europe it's quite simple. But in the U.S. these employers just love to beat around the bush, try to lowball people. They've known all along what they will and will NOT pay. So let's just save us some time and get down to it.

I haven't the slightest idea. But, I ordered a copy of the report for my records and there it was in black in white - salary, last position held and dates of employment.

I like the way you think. But, I know my past bosses would tell anyone inquiring about past pay or getting an ex-employee's W-2 or W-4 to buzz-off.

They probably have some deal with Inverfy. Giving them their employee information such as salary and work history, to have access to Inverfy databases on other companies. I think it should be made illegal in my humble opinion. There is a thing called a right to privacy.

I just started at a new company and got a copy of my background check and salary verification wasn't on there.

I never understood why that mattered though. What does another company's pay equity have to do with YOUR company?

That company could have been privately held with 6 employees and a super tight budget.

Am I not worth 50k if I made 40k last year?
