I think its too premature to say you got the job just yet. Although it sounds like you've made it to the final round which is good. What the "final round" is, could be a final interview or a meeting to make an offer (some companies just email you the offer letter, some hand it in person). Usually they will only check references of a candidate if they are truly interested in the candidate.
Although I have been there, a job I really like and anxiously waiting to hear back. I would say control your obsession, and continue your job search until you have a guarantee offer you want to accept.
Thank you for your advice. I've been trying to not think about the job and actually have 2 interviews set up this week. I'm placing most of energy into those. Same position title but a lot further from my house.
I see on their website that their are 4 steps in the hiring process. Phone interview, F2F interview, Presentation, and if you make it past that then references checked.
I assume the last step (not mentioned) is an offer. I plan to email the manager tomorrow.
I've sent a Thank You email the day after. Manager responded politely. It has only been about 12 days since the interview and 9 days since references were completed. What is a nice follow up email to send to the manager asking about my status? What should I say without seeming too impatient and aggressive?
Normally reference checks should be done as the last step before extending an offer. Checking references should only be done once you're otherwise fairly certain of a candidate and as a disqualifier if you get a bad reference. Increasingly, companies are wanting to pre-screen references before even granting an interview.
Congratulations! This wait is the hardest, especially if it's after they've contacted your supervisor. I'm in that waiting period now... with the feds... who I have heard can take up to 2 months after a reference check. It has only been a week and a half so far.
