Technically it is a house/land for sale at $165k and not $165k cash... and those are only worth what someone will pay for it. Right now since they can't get people to move there, price tag is pointless, could be $100m or $0, they have no buyers

MSN had an update on this -- the town is not paying anyone to move there, and the mayor wants people to stop calling his office asking about it.

Yes @eyeb you are right this is basically a land or house for sale.

not even sure why people confused it...
It's like they have no reading comprehension when it involves numbers greater than 10. Offering a package of ____ for $X, is a deal to buy said package for $X.

When a company offers a "benefits" package, they are offering to pay X benefits to buy your "labor". When you buy a car, and the dealer offers you additional "package" features, they don't mean "for free".

It's sad that they even had to get the news to publish a follow up story to clarify something that didn't need to be clarified

As noted in the comments of the now modified article in the link, it was originally reported that the town was giving the money away.

the original article stated they were offering $165,000- this was not a "reading comp" issue - they have since edited the information as it was reported incorrectly.

the title of the article from your own post

New Zealand town with 'too many jobs' offering packages of land and homes for $165k

unless they changed it to that by the time I read it... I don't know how it was "edited". I also see nothing in the title itself that suggests "getting $165k"

But I only read the title and not the article...

The original article title and content said the NZ town was giving away house and land. What you see now is the edited version. If you think about it, why would an article be written about a town with land and houses for sale? Why would thousands of people mistakenly contacted the town to inquire?
