I actually think it may take average 2-2.5 years. The thing is, some people don't like to be approached by strangers, even if both are in the same industry!

Hemlock, that is interesting to know.

I don't mean approaching hiring managers to help with getting a job - so pushy. but trying to connect with a possible hiring manager 3-6 months in advance and not ask for a job. I read something for Liz Ryan before but can't find it and she recommends reaching directly to the hiring manager but I found it pushy.

I didn't know that participating in the groups is helpful, but maybe I should try that.

going to networking events is a no-brainer, but not practical if you are not in the same state or want to relocate.

Yes go to meetup.com and put in where you live along with your profession (field). Then it will show you meetups around your area.
