Use a piece you've already written. I always used the same one.

I submit writing samples all the time. I use the same one or two, typically. There isn't a whole lot from work I can submit though due to the fact that most of what I do would be a big black blob of redaction otherwise.

How long should it be? Is a paragraph or one or two sentences enough? We have recently been charged with promoting programs we have proposed or that we have been assigned to by writing copy for those programs in the newsletter. Would that be an acceptable sample?

I'm not a writer and it's not a writing job. Maybe I should just write a short piece on why I want the job?

LOL. exactly. The resume and if, the cover letter, are two writing samples right there. Unless the job is for a writer or some other type where you are writing and being paid to write, it's stupid to ask for "writing samples." PR, journalism, copywriting/editing and some marketing, I can understand. All else, NOPE> It's just a tactic used to weed people out. The mentality is: are they desperate enough to submit one or "can they follow directions" type of bs. Anybody with a college degree on their resume can "write."

Thanks. FYI the job is working at a university library.
