I've been offered an interview which I would have to fly round trip. Hotel 2 nights and r/t air fare, rental care and meals. Is there a standard who pays for the cost of the trip. Total cost about $650 and change.

They pay. If they don't pay, don't go. If they aren't willing to spend money to interview you, they don't really want to hire you.

If they didn't offer to pay, it's on you. Generally paid travel for interviews is limited to top management positions, and very high paying tech jobs. There is no standard. In case, it would apply only to CEO and managing director interviews, for everything else it's pay or pass on the interview. We always have plenty of local applicants so no need to spend a lot of money recruiting from afar.

The Director said he would find out what the next step would look like after he said that he wanted to go to the next step. Doesn't sound like they do this a lot. Its upper management with clinical and executive skill sets.

Yeah, I agree with the "they need to pay crowd", unless this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.. You will kick yourself for spending the money if you don't get it.

I was always flown to the interviews, except for one...which I was able to slyly get a potential employer to pay for one leg of the trip since they were back to back interviews.

Whom ever is more needy pays for the travel. If they really need you, they will pay. If you really need them, you will pay. Each company has their own policy and that policy can differ for various positions. As a general rule, if they reached out to you as in headhunted you, they should be paying. If you applied for a position that you knew was out of your area, you should have expected to pay for travel.

You're underestimating big time if you think you can make such a trip for $650! More like $1200--$1500.


Usually the company pays for the trip. They pre-pay the airline tickets and hotel and rental car. Usually you keep and submit receipts for meals. Don't be afraid to ask up front about this. Ask whomever offered you the interview----what type of travel arrangements will you make? Sometimes, when my dh was interviewing, they would send him a pre-paid card for meals and incidentals. Just make sure to keep all receipts.

I 100% agree. Unless you're applying for a higher position like management or you have something different to offer, then they may or may not pay. If your interview is for a common job where thousands of applicants apply and they're willing to pay then you should be grateful. If they aren't willing to pay and you really want the job and can afford it, then I say go for it. I wouldn't just ignore the job like someone mentioned.
