I was told that I was the first person to interview for the position (they are looking to add 3 members).

Is this a good sign that I am close to getting the job or have high probability of being the top candidate if I was the first person picked to interview for the role?

No idea what the reasoning is behind the timing. Don't think too much into it or you'll drive yourself crazy.

Signs that you are closer to the job are:

1/ a second interview
2/ making the short list
3/ request for references

Yep!

It could just be that you were the one able to be put in the first slot. I wouldn't read into this. But good luck

No. You'll also be the first to be forgotten! Asked to be the last to interview. Joke with the interviewer that they saved the "best for last".

I agree. When we schedule interviews, HR will simply call each person that I have selected for interviews in no particular order and give each the available days and times to choose from. In my (vast) experience, the first are less likely to be remembered when interviewing more than 5-6 people. I would definitely recommend being among the last as the best timing.

If I am the only applicant for the job, do you think I have a high chance of getting the job.

Obviously the odds are in your favor, however, as a hiring manager I should warn you that most of us are not going to hire someone just because they are the only applicant if they are not also well qualified. During the recession we would get over 100 applicants, now maybe 30, but I have interviewed as many as 10 and had HR extend the recruitment to bring in more applicants when none interviewed turned out to really be suitable.
