So I provided about 6 references for my currently role I am up for. What is asked of a reference. I am an EA and I provided the bankers/executives I directly worked with. I also provided my supervisor. (They were not the same people). I am just curious what someone would ask them? I know all my references are solid and will give me great support.

this really depends on the company and none of us can tell you for sure what will be asked. That being said, they often ask about their experience with you as a colleague, strengths/weaknesses, major accomplishments at your last role, etc.

I ask questions to verify experience and attitude. If an applicant claims to have accomplished X, or lead project Y, I will ask the reference to talk about the applicants role in the project.

I might ask about how the applicant deals with conflict, whether they are willing to take initiative or require a lot of supervision, assessments of technical competence, that type of thing.

I also ask each reference for the name of another person I can talk to about the applicant.

Here HR calls the references, but when I was hired the people they called got back to me with how it went and told me some of the questions. Besides the usual strengths and weaknesses, there were questions meant to measure work ethic, responsibility, reliability, and personality.
