Here we have BNSF, and it's a private company, as is Norfolk and the others. Even Amtrack, while heavily subsidized by taxpayers is not a federal agency. They all have their jobs posted on their websites.
Most of the major carriers used to have "hiring sessions" near their major hubs; these were posted on their web sites.
A couple of words of warning:
(1) the rail industry is in recession right now, primarily due to the loss of traffic in coal, and other industrial commodities;
(2) the jobs tend to be extremely demanding, particularly where working hours are concerned -- most new hires are conductors, freight crewmen are expected to be available on two hours notice at any hour of the day or night
(3) the nature of the work is such that traffic usually peaks on weekends, so don't even think of applying if a social life is important to you; the same goes for "family time"
