I had a 4 hour interview on Friday with 4 different people. Yesterday, the talent acquisition person for the company emailed me and said the following:

"We now have the position posted to our Career Site. I would like to ask if you can go to the Career Site and apply to the position so we have your application on file." Let me know if you have any questions. I will give you feedback from the interview as soon as I can. Thank you."

Is this just a formality or do you think there may be some serious interest in my candidacy?

Thank you!

Does the form include releases to run background checks?

If so, that may indicate that you are in the running. Checks cost money, so they may not do them for everyone.

Or perhaps it was an oversight that they should have had the application up front.

Good luck, either way.

No, none of that. It didn't even ask for references! My question is that if after the interview, they were not interested - why even fill out an application? Is it some kind of legal standard that an application must be filled out if you interview for a job at a company?

Tracking and processing (if hired).

He just wrote back and said that every interview must fill out an application and they were having issues with putting on the company website and that is why he did not ask me to do it before. His response was formal and brief.

It seems like its nothing but standard practice and no indication of interest in me as a candidate.

Thank you

Just fill it out! You're way overthinking something that is a big nothing...

If they are considering you, and you don't fill it out, what type of message do you think you're sending to the employer? To me, it woulds be a sign of an irresponsible applicant and maybe even a nitpicking dolt. Is that the message you want to send?

You can never really tell what the reasoning is.

I was transferring job locations (same company) and had already been offered the job in the new location but was still told to fill out an online application for the specific job requisition.

It could be that they are very interested in you or not. No one knows.

Why are you getting defensive! I did fill it out of course! I was wondering if it was a sign of interest in me as a candidate. You obviously did not read my post properly. I was in no way complaining about filling out the application!!!!!!!!!! Sheesh!

Probably a formality considering the just posted the position as their reason.

I once filled an application out after I was hired, seemed it was just a formality for record keeping. I was referred by a friend who worked there, I interviewed and they hired me, asked me to come in a little early during my first week of work to fill out an application.
