Iím supposed to start a job new week, but I am waiting on my pre-employment background check. The company thatís performing the background check is having trouble verifying my Disney Internship employment. Itís been 5 years since Iíve been with the company and Iíve now relocated back to my home state. From a quick google search, Disney uses a hotline system and you have to pay $20-ish for employment verifications. Iíve been waiting on my pre-employment background check for over 3 weeks and am becoming sickly worried. Has anyone ever had trouble with employment verifications? Any idea what happens if employment cannot be verified? I do have all my IRS information about the job, but nothing actually states Disney. The company says Payroll Services and the city listed a smaller city just outside of Orlando. I've been told I cannot start my new job until the background check comes back. I'm just so worried!

Yep. Unfortunately it's up to the new employer whether they want to just go ahead or not. These days most employers don't respond eagerly to employment verification inquiries unless you're a current employee and poke and prod HR. Big companies with the hotlines tend to be inflexible.

Personally I don't know how anyone gets a job verified anything past the last 2-3 years these days. Only half of my past few employers are good about verification. Most are slashing HR resources when it comes to these menial tasks. I have been hired in the past despite the new company being unable to verify some of my old ones. The issue with verification these days is it's outsourced to India so you can imagine most don't care whether you get the job or not and are just there for the paycheck. They aren't going to try hard for you and they don't do any research either when they run into roadblocks.

3 weeks is not a good sign. However you certainly aren't the first this is happening to and I would hate to think your new company would invest the time interviewing you and legitimately disqualify you for not being able to verify an internship 5 years ago. They'd have to spend additional time and money to restart the process again.

I would get in touch with new company HR and ask what the protocol is when they can't verify certain employers due to no fault on the applicant.

Then again it is probably a bad employer if they rescind the offer just based on this. So you would have dodged a bullet.
