That's why I never wanted HR to be involved in the recruiting process. Cover letters tell me a lot about a person such as their ability to write and whether they have the common sense to put a proper letter together. It also tells you something about their attention to detail; e.g., grammatical errors, misspelled words words.

To this day I don't understand why cover letters are so essential. Your resume should be enough. Unless your "cover letter" is your email to the employer with the resume attached what's the point?
