The background check company my prospective employer is using HireRight can't get in touch with an old employer (temp agency) because they have closed. I downloaded my wage and salary verification through irs.gov which shows I worked for the agency but that doesn't give dates employed. I called the corporate office of the temp agency and they charge $25 for an employment verification. Do I have any other way of proving my employment through the irs etc... Any suggestions would help.

Don't you have those dates of employment in any records yourself? You should keep some records for exactly this. Any older CVs or a resume listing periods of employment? Old job application forms? A letter informing you that you got the temp agency job? Any personnel paperwork from the job? Social Security statement? Bank account statements showing salary deposits? Between the IRS record and a supporting document from your files won't they accept that? If not, suck up the $25.

I'm thinking I will have to suck it up and pay the $25. Wasn't saying I wouldn't. Was curious if there were any official ways. In moving 3 times in the past few years I can't find my w2's or 1099's which HireRight only accepts.

Do you really want the job? If so then pay $25. If not, then don't.

Have you tried talking to your potential employer about it? Just because HireRight can't verify it doesn't mean that the potential employer won't believe you. Honestly, the tax info should do the trick.
