If needed they will ask for a college transcript mailed from the college or university. The transcript will state that a degree was awarded. These documents are usually official looking and difficult to photocopy. That is what is most common in the USA.

BTW the transcript shows all of the courses and the grades earned. It is easy to determine the college major, minor and other areas of expertise. That is one reason that transcripts are requested. The request is submitted to the university (perhaps by the candidate) but it is officially mailed from the university’s registrar. If needed it can also be verified by telephone call that so and so actually mailed the transcript. This is a system that is pretty difficult to defeat.
