I've never had this happen before. I responded to a job listing early Dec. After a call and some emails, I was told that they had a different position open that they thought I would be better for. I said I was interested.
Due to the boss having a cold and a busy schedule in Dec, I was told they would like me to come in Jan 14th at 10AM. I agreed. Jan 14 was about 5 weeks away at that point.
If I don't hear from them first, should I email to confirm the interview a week or a couple days before Jan 14?
Yes, email to confirm. Especially if it takes a long time for you to get to their location, or if you have to take time off from your current job to make it happen.
Yes. I was contacted early December and they gave me a tentative date this Thursday, the 10th. I've been calling and emailing them to confirm for a week now with no reply.

I know lots of times employers won't respond unless they want to move forward, but that is pretty flaky of them to give a date, even if tentative, without a reply. I would be hesitant to work for them, even if they respond after a week. Seems like most of the time, the way the interview process is, continues throughout the job.
I sent a confirmation email and it was replied to positively.
Good luck but I have not heard of something scheduled so far in advance ever working out. 1 million things have happened with the business between then and now.
