Long story short, I'm currently in the Bay Area attending a computer programming based institution. I came into CA around October 2018. Just recently, my family sends me a notice from NYC DCAS to attend an Investigation Interview for a civil service position I took an exam for about two-three years ago.

However, in June 2018, I accepted a position with one of NYC's City Agencies but was ultimately let go with the reason being "things are not working out." Although I'm not sure exactly what my supervisor wrote in my file, I know that I did not leave on good terms. It was a job that I did not do well in, and with mental health issues that flared up during the hours I was working, I knew that I would be removed eventually.

Fast forward, I'm not sure if I should fly back to NYC for the interview given that one bad job on my record, since the CPD-B form I'll have to fill out will ask me to disclose information about my termination. However, I'm not even sure how the Investigation Interview works. Do they just want to get the necessary docs to confirm my eligibility for the job, including college courses and NYC residency? Would I have to attend another interview with the specific city agency I would be working for later? When would I hear back about a job offer? Should I even attend, with already having a bad track record with that other city agency?

I want to get some more info about this, especially since I would have to consider moving back into the city and temporarily(?) leaving my CS education here in CA.

Thoughts? Anyone here with Civil Service exam/DCAS Investigation Interview experience?

The investigation process with DCAS simply determine your eligibility for that specific civil service title. After you finish your investigation process, there is no job offer right away. You have to wait to be call to a hiring pool. Also, you will receive in the mail stating if you qualify or not qualify for that specific civil service title.

There's no way for you to ask that city agency HR for information in your personnel file?

I agree. Find out what's in your file before wasting time, energy and money interviewing. And do you actually want to work in NY again for Govt? If not then just ignore the notice.

Just because something is available doesn't mean it's right for you or that you have to take it.
