Had two interviews for two retail jobs last week. One was bait and switch the position. ( my 10 minute interview post) The second was a phone interview from the company corporate “recruiter”. They supposedly loved my resume. After the interview ( the questions were read from a script). The interviewer mentioned that if there is an opening in my geographical area I would be asked to take an assessment. Was cautioned to “be very careful” in completing it because if I failed....I would be permanently removed from their data base of job seekers. Seriously? My resume screams retail store management and outside B-B sales in wholesale. Hmmmmm....thoughts?
What are we supposed to think? Their process is what it is. If I had to guess, their assessment is a test of personality and willingness to help/be customer friendly. A "failure" would mean that they don't think you have the attributes that they are looking for in an employee, so they remove you from the system. I had to take a "test" like that when I worked for a top 20 Fortune 500 retail operation.
As an FYI, vetted scripted interviews are on strong legal ground and are much easier to defend against accusations of bias as opposed to interviews that lack consistency and structure.
It means like many foolish companies they let their HR people off their leash and they [typically not being very bright bulbs] bought into pseudoscience psychometric testing as a primary screening tool.
