Gnubler, those are funny and you have my COMPLETE sympathy. It is a daunting task and one that I'm sure if the majority of applicants could manage to be on our side would clearly see just how numbing the whole experience is for us. At times the only thing to do is just shake your head, smile pleasantly and thank them for their time.

Our ads have ALWAYS said to "Apply In Person" and I'm ANAL about giving out the full address. If we are too far away for you to even consider driving to us for an interview or to apply in person then we are too far away for you to properly report to work on time. One of us can stop long enough to interview prospective employees if one should come in w/o an appointment.

As for the age. Depends on the position that is being filled and if the person is physically able to perform the job. We have hired plenty of guys that are pushing 50 for some very labor intensive jobs. My own dad is a hair over 65 and is a "semi retired" truck driver. When he quit work full time as on OTR driver in order to be home every night he put in applications all over town. To this day he still gets calls from companies that he applied to several years ago. They are literally BEGGING for the older workers to come to work for the more physically demanding jobs as the younger generations don't want to get dirty, risk getting a boo-boo or actually DO work. The company he works for now has had the toughest time finding workers in his position and they have said they PREFER the older workers and actually LOOK for the retired truck drivers. If your under 50 they will barely consider you. The guys they have hired under 50 typically only last a week if that. My dad even worked for us for awhile (talk about strange - my husband was my dad's boss). Even with his endurance it was too much for him physically and it has proven to be so for many guys over 50 for those positions in our company.

We are looking for an Administrative Assistant and whenever we have needed to find someone for this position I have made it clear that there IS room to "move up" in this industry. One just has to have the intiative. The few females in this industry that are not "paper pusher" admin's in the office are few and far between. These are the ones that are the "Specialists" and/or the "Consultants" in the field. Even for men this position is BEGGING for more people. The numbers are so low that the ones that are worth anything and willing to do the work can command a high price per hour and travel the country. Or learn enough of the industry and go into outside sales for us and we can hire someone else to do the inside paper job.

Along the same lines there is a DIRE need for people to do the repairs for equipment in this industry. Most of the people that do this kind of work are self employeed. There are only TWO people in all of our area of the state that do this and BOTH of them are over 60.

That is very nice of you. My brother in law, a recent new arrival to America, was looking for a position and almost NONE of the ads had an address of even an area listed! I mean, it would be nice to know if you are in Cobb, Gwinett, DeKalb or Fulton at the very least- especially since he has to use Cobb Transit and/or MARTA for work. If it something way out in Lawrenceville and we live 40 miles away, he would skip the ad and move on.

Don't fart. Yes, it happened to me while interviewing students for a bookkeeping position. A large girl, maybe 22, looked quite uncomfortable and then suddenly appeared relieved. Five seconds later, I found out why. Small office, low ventilation. She didn't make it.

Now someone has to start a thread on appropriate behavior for job interviewers. Hmm, perhaps I will.

6. Dress appropriate for the job. Some don't require a full out business suit so get a picture of what to wear for THAT job. Wear something that would be the nicest you would wear on a NORMAL day for the job.

My own personal rule has always been to wear a suit, not matter what, and at least a tie and long sleeve dress shirt minus the coat. I would rather err on the side of caution and overdress to be safe.

First impressionas and appearance are paramount, that's for sure.

I want to hear more. Are you a hiring manager? Isn't it who you know that also really counts? Doesn't that help in you getting a job?

1. SHOW UP ON TIME IF NOT A LITTLE EARLY for your interview!!!! Out of all 8 interviews we have conducted in 3 days this week only TWO were on time. The rest were all LATE!!! Next one late will NOT get an interview! Even tried to give an "out", "did you find the place okay?". To which they answer, "no problem at all finding you".

2. If you only had a job for a few weeks, do NOT feel the need to put it on your resume. Really. Don't as it does NOT help you if you have SEVERAL of these. Yes, saw it on many MANY resumes so far.

3. I do not mind that you have been out of the working world for 4-7 years. I'm a mom too. So you stayed home w/ the kids. That is PERFECTLY FINE AND ACCEPTABLE with me.

4. If you laugh like a hyenia then PLEASE try to refrain from laughing out loud in the interview. I heard the high pitched squels coming out of one the other day and almost passed out. Not just once either. I was not even the one doing the interview EITHER! I was in another office and they were still on the "first round" of interviews.

5. If your not eligible for rehire at your previous employer because you were too busy texting......... put the DA#^ PHONE UP!!!! Seriously, had this happen the other day for one applicant.

6. Dress appropriate for the job. Some don't require a full out business suit so get a picture of what to wear for THAT job. Wear something that would be the nicest you would wear on a NORMAL day for the job.

7. $8.50 an HOUR!!! Is ALL your expecting and you have a MASTERS DEGREE!?!?!?!?!?!?! And your applying for a PROFESSIONAL JOB!?!?!?! Really trying to "sell yourself there" aren't we. NOT!

8. If you quit a job for a pitiful reason then don't give that info out. Seriously. Had one applicant that quit their last job after a week because they would not give her an earpiece for the phone. WTH!?!?!?!?!?!!?! What if our phone system won't handle an earpiece either?

9. Do not tell us you want a "VERY LOW stress job" and don't like to answer the phones as that is one of the TOP items IN the JOB DESCRIPTION!!!! Don't waste the time applying and don't waste our time having to interview you then.

I could go on with more of what we have seen but I've got one that has actually shown up ON TIME! WOW!!! Might have to hire this one on the spot.

lol dirty shorts and flip flops.

My last interview I just wore an untucked button up shirt, pin stripe slacks, and black dress shoes. Bleached my teeth before and sprayed a half squirt of body spray on my wrists. I don't use cologne because I know it can offend people or bother people's allergies.

Forget it. Compared to these people I'd be a slice of heaven with a good base of experience (just don't ask me to make the coffee as I've told my boss, NO. Then I'm married to him). It has been utterly AMAZING and DISGUSTING what has shown up. Oh, after I was gone yesterday one girl came in wearing DIRTY SHORTS AND FLIP FLOPS! Then reading her application........... if you can not even SPELL THE TOWN YOU LIVE IN CORRECTLY........... UM NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS AND PARENTS:
Teach these kids how to PROPERLY FILL OUT AN APPLICATION!!!!

I think I saw someone use a line like that in a Dilbert cartoon once, but I didn't think anyone would be stupid enough to say it in real life.
