So a recruiter set me up with an interview, I went through it, send a thank you note to the interviewer and found out today that I didnt get the job. I am fine with it, but I was wondering if is still ok to send a follow up thank you note to the interviewer telling them to keep me in mind for any future positions? Or should I just leave like how it is?

We appreciate such thank you notes. It's customary to send one after the interview, though, not after rejection.

I don't think it hurts to send it. Express what you said about keeping you in mind for future positions and thank them for his/her time.

It doesn't hurt to send a note to confirm your interest in future positions but it doesn't have to be a thank you note. Something like "...although I wasn't selected for this position, please consider me for future position which might be a match for my skills..." or something to that effect, cleaning up the wording....

In fact, doing this essentially establishes a network connection with that person in that company. You probably get his phone number and perhaps give him a telephone call every few months to see how things are going. He would be a valuable network person.

What about if the interviewer never responds to my thank you notes...should I still email/call them up in a few months?

Send it, because no one else will.

This.

I had someone send me a note saying almost the exact same thing two years ago. About six weeks later a friend was hiring for a similar position and I forwarded his resume, she ended up hiring him.

Definitely do it. I once actually got a job that way. I was rejected when I applied, I kept in touch with the interviewer and was hired by that company a year later.
