That particular type of business has a fairly high turnover rates in certain job roles, and often people don't give notice. So we'd constantly run ads and be able to weed through resumes and pull out the best of them to have ready to call for immediate interviews/hire instead of having to take the time to run an ad, wait for people to respond, weed out the best ones for interviews after a week or two. It took hiring from a 2-3 week process to a 2-3 day process for people who didn't need to give notice. We generally preferred to hire recently seperated military or laid-off/RIF'ed, so it worked out well for us to have a constant pool of incoming resumes.

Wasting people's Time. Did they still think that the person would come in after they said that?

Why is it a waste of time? As long as someone is made aware of the fact in advance, they can choose to accept or decline the invitation to interview. No one was ever interviewed for a position that wasn't open without being made aware that it was a future interest only interview. I'd say that over 25% of the people working for that company were hired after future interest interviews. And yes, over half of the people who were told it was a future interest interview did agree to coming in for the interview. Maybe that's why many of them now have jobs while people who thought it would be a "waste of time" are unemployed?

Frankly for anyone sitting around collecting unemployment, it's wise to go on any and every interview possible. It allows you to sharpen your interviewing skills, and even if you don't get (or want) the job you are interviewing for, there could be others that haven't been published available at that company.

I just don't have a interest being in a "standby applicant" for any company. Either you need to fill a position soon or it's no need for me to come in and put in the "Just In case" database.

Which certainly limits some potential employment opportunities.

You don't have to worry about being a "just in case" type applicant. Remember she said that this applied for "certain positions' not all of them.

These type of jobs are great for people that want some money for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months...It is hardcore customer service jobs...the customers are unahppy...about something...and then you move on to a better job.

These jobs are not forever, unless you forget to quit.

Just like you are not applying for mcdonalds jobs i imagine...right?

I think this is more suited for a employed person not someone on unemployment. A person who is unemployed doesn't have time to interview for future opportunities. The future is now.

So what does the person on unemployment have to lose interviewing for a job that they might be offered in a few weeks--or even a few days?

It's the attitude of "I'm not going to be bothered" that is keeping a LOT of people on unemployment. What does the person on unemployment have BUT time?
