I'm currently on the west coast trying to relocate to the east coast. I had a phone interview, which I thought went bad. However, they still asked for references. After following up, the company said that they would continue with the office interview but at my expense and they did not indicate if there was a high probability of me getting hired.

What should I do????

Counter with an offer to repay travel expenses, should they hire you. Otherwise, I wouldn't waste my money.

Personally I wouldn't do it.

If they previously had suggested they would pay, and are now rescinding that, it is a huge red flag that they aren't going to hire you.

Even if it hadn't previously discussed, and this is just surprising and unexpected information for you, I wouldn't buy a plane ticket unless I had several interviews scheduled for the trip. In my field, it isn't at all common to pay for applicant's travel expenses, not even for senior people. They usually have plenty of potential hires locally so recruiting out-of-town applicants or paying their expenses is an unnecessary effort.

The job is at a small local CPA firm. They didn't say they would pay...but the recruiter that I'm working told me that she had placed someone at that firm and that they paid relo costs.

If you had to follow up with them to schedule a second interview, I think I'd pass. They obviously aren't that interested, or they would have been the ones to reach out and schedule the interview.

Its all through the recruiter. When she followed up, they said they would continue with the office interview but at my expense...

If she recruits regularly for them, she should be able to get her contact to give you a better idea of your chances of winning the job. If right now you are at the bottom of the pack with several candidates in front of you, I'd pass. If you are their number one or two candidate, it might be worth the trip.

If you do decide to make the trip, I'd try to schedule other interviews at the same time if at all possible. Also, keep all travel expense receipts, the costs are tax deductible.

That's the problem, I asked her what where my chances and she couldn't say...She just said that should I get the position, she would reimburse half of my flight expenses.

You keep jumping back and forth between the term relocation expenses and interview expenses. Which is it? It sounds like you want your interviews travel expenses--plane and hotel--paid for. If that is the case, the fact that they previously paid someone's relocation expenses is really irrelevant. That person may have paid their own costs of flying to several interviews before they landed the job.

But I still wouldn't do it. The recruiter would be more positive if there was any chance and they would have followed up with you not the other way around.

Interview expenses, sorry. Its just that the recruiter made it seem as though they would pay. But still, I dont' feel very convinced that they really want me to interview and that's what concerns me.
