I will be relocating to Las Vegas in October and am looking at jobs to see what is out there, is it true that employers check to see if potential hires have Facebook pages? And then not hire them or fire them (if already hired) if they dont like what they see

I think Facebook should be a person's private matter and not for the company they are employed with to be snooping around on. Unless you are taking pics at work goofing off or something

Otherwise what you do on your own time isn;t your employers business? Does anybody agree with me

Will potential employers really check my myspace and facebook pages?

Aren't there all sorts of security settings and access settings on Facebook to limit who sees what? Can't you control who sees your pages? Wouldn't this eliminate only certain people and employers? Sounds like it isn't a problem?

Otherwise, If the employer pays for an internet connection, then it sounds like they have every right to "snoop" on the internet.

Finally, if I was an employer and somebody made negative information about himself available online for me to see, then yes, I would consider it. Why shouldn't I?

Government contractors/law firms in this have been. There have been a couple news stories, in or on real outlets (sorry thought I was still in P&OC for a second), over the last several months about people who have lost out on jobs due to their Facebook postings. One I remember was a kid from Howard U Law who had his offer from a K St. firm rescinded. There was also that case of a teacher a few months ago fired for having guns on her's.

There you go. So isn't this a non issue for the original poster? I don't know Facebook very well so I can't write for sure, but I think that's the way it works.

unless the employer is hacking into FB or somehow stealing passwords, they can only see what an accountholder chooses to let them see. The viral internet stories of people being fired for what they wrote on FB, such as the one linked above, all represent examples in which an employee was 'friends' with their boss on FB, meaning they had chosen to give their employer access to the thoughts photos and activities they posted on their account. And thus the outcome was entirely predictable.
