I want to add one important thing to my post above, that I couldn't find the right words for earlier:
I don't force myself to be happy all the time. Or even most of the time. Smiling every day is a fairly achievable goal. But I let myself have a good cry every now and then. Most days being determined is as positive an attitude as I can muster. And I think that is normal and reasonable. Being frustrated, depressed, angry, and sad are normal and reasonable reactions to prolonged unemployment. I think I would be in need of psychiatric intervention if I were truly feeling happy all the time about this situation.
Good afternoon. I want to comment on posts #8, #9 and #11.
Kodaka, I am glad there is a Meetup for unemployed support in your area. I learned about Meetups from another City-Data forum. There are some networking Meetups in my area, but they are geared towards those who are currently working.
I thought that I knew some out of touch people but the remark about not being aware there is a recession tops anything I've heard.
A personal contact or luck is what it takes these days. Getting these contacts is a difficult endeavor.
Just yesterday I told someone that something would be terribly wrong with me if I looked happy and bouncy right now.

Start one of your own! When I was first unemployed I looked and didn't find anything through meetup. Months later I returned to the meetup website looking for something else and found this group....because someone else found out the same thing, that there weren't any meetups for unemployed people. So she plunked down $20 to become an organizer. The group got off to a very quick start and we regularly have a dozen people at our meetings. Being an organizer seems to be good karma; our organizer got a job only a few months after starting the group, and we have a 'sister' group in a nearby city that has been through three organizers this year, because they all got jobs shortly after taking the reins!

Good karma and good news! I'll look into this.
