Hi all,

This question is not a joke. Anyway, is it considered crass to ask to make payments for a temple membership, or is it acceptable? I'm a bit embarrassed to ask the membership committee. I (cowardly) sent in my application, and then indicated I'd call them to make payment arrangements if membership was accepted.

Thanks!

Before 2008 donations were abundant, so some had membership fees and many did not. Due to numerous losses through the years, donations have dropped dramatically. So now to keep afloat, most are strongly requesting membership fees. Its like the Chabad an hourish away from me used to advertise open doors and no fees. Now they want $600 per person. Its just a sign of the times.

I definitely have no problems with the requirements, but is it acceptable to ask to make payments? Our temple asks for $1800 a year.

It should be acceptable. My synagogue asks for considerably less for a family membership, and quarterly payments are the norm.
Ask a member of the membership committee or the board privately if you're concerned about it.

Thanks so much; I appreciate the info! If quarterly dues are the norm, I can definitely handle that and will ask if I can do that. Our temple has a flat rate for individuals and families.

I think it's absolutely fine to ask to pay in installments - especially with a price like that! Temples are generally very willing to work with you.

In my shul, we certainly allow for monthly payments. We also have sliding dues based on need. If you don't have much money, it's not a reason to deny membership. Some people pay full membership, some half, and some $20. Just depends... Oh, and some schnor's come all the time and never pay a nickle. I guess they have to pay it back before they get to Olam Haba.

Thank you, friend. Schnor - that's a new word to me. I will have to look it up!
