There's a fascinating Gamara in Derek Eretz Zutra that says there are 9 people in history who were alive on Earth and went straight to Olam Haba (the world to come) without first dying. The gamara translates as:
Quote:
'' Nine entered the Garden of Eden when they were still alive, and they are: Enoch (Chanoch) the son of Jared, Elijah, Messiah, Eliezer the bondsman of Abraham, Hirom the king of Zor, Ebed-melech the Cushi and Jabetz the son of R. Jehudah the Prince, Bothiah the daughter of Pharaoh and Serech the daughter of Ascher, and, according to others, also R. Jehoshua b. Levi. ''

Jews often talk about one of the 9 referenced in the quote above, Elijah the prophet, as having ascended to heaven in a flaming chariot while still alive. Jews often have stories of encountering Elijah in our daily, even now in the 21st century, typically when he is "on the scene" to save somebody's life. Every Jew in thw world also opens the door for him during thr 2 passover seders, to invite him to our festive passover meal. We leave a cup of wine poured for him and usually an empty seat at the table.
What's most fascinating about the list above to me, however, is the inclusion of the name "Messiah" to the list of nine who lived and went to Olam Haba without dying. Sounds a suspiciaouly a bit like another religion that is uniquely not Jewish.
Check out the link below, which includes the quote above a detailed accounts of the 9. What are your thoughts?
