Definitely. If you can prove matrilineal descent, there is no question and no need to convert.

I could not prove my mother's mother's Jewish status, so I converted.

Once a Jew always a Jew, no matter what she has done in her life. There's only one type of Jew-a Jew. A Jew is either somebody born to a Jewish mother or one who has undergone a conversion. Both are forever.

Technically, no. However, integration in a Jewish community might be hard if you cannot definitively prove you are Jewish, and you might need to convert.
