Can anyone recommend a kibbutz where I could spend a few weeks in the winter? I spent two semesters in Europe when I was in college and wish there was a way to have a similar experience for a few weeks now that I'm older (32) and have a normal 9 to 5 job. I get bored on vacations when there are no opportunities for social interaction, and I've been fascinated with communal living ever since I attended boarding school as a teenager.

Also, I'm not sure if this will have a big impact on the recommendations, but I'm a gay American male and not Jewish. I know non-Jewish people who have stayed on kibbutzim and had amazing experiences, so I'm assuming the people there are fairly open. But I probably wouldn't enjoy staying at a kibbutz that is extremely conservative/orthodox.

Thanks in advance!

I have never had a kibbutz vacation, but I just Googled that and a lot of stuff came up so you might try your friend Mr. Google.

But what I CAN recommend to you -- and you don't have to be Jewish to participate in this -- is a program in which you go to Israel and spend 1, 2, or 3 weeks as a volunteer on an army base. I've done this twice, and while living conditions are spartan, it's a wonderful experience, and I'd do it again in a minute if I could. (Family circumstances prevent me.)

The last time I went, which was a year ago, there were about 12 people in our group of volunteers, of whom I think 3 or 4 were not Jewish.

The program is run by an Israeli organization called Sar-El (www.sar-el.org), represented in the USA by Volunteers for Israel (www.vfi-usa.org).

My father has done this program twice and loved it each time. I think the gist, is you pay for your flight, and the organization covers the rest of the cost. But you do work some hours each day.

Thanks. I'll look into that.

BTW, I realize Google has a lot of resources, but I find I usually get more useful, insightful suggestions from real human beings here. I really appreciate your help.

FWIW the Kibbutzim of today are not the same as they were 40ish years ago. The are more of a green capitalistic business park than a socialist communal neighborhood. But the following link may help you in your query.
