Do Jews believe that certain "Messianic Prophecies" must be fulfilled before a Messiah arrives on Earth?

One poster indicated that certain things must happen before a Messiah comes. These included:

"Rebuilding the Temple, gathering all Jews to Israel, re-establishing the Davidic monarchy, ushering in world peace, spreading Torah to the world".

What does it mean to re-establish the "Davidic monarchy". I mean, there is probably no way to determine who among us is a descendent of King David, and most people these days would resist establishing a monarchy of any kind.

Are there any other important Messianic Prophecies?

He will reestablish the Kingdom of David. Yes, Moshiach will do just that. Those days are not these days. Biblical times will be reestablished, in other words.

Those are things that the messiah will do, not what must happen in order for him to emerge. As for the Davidic monarchy, it means just what it says: the messiah will reestablish the royal line of David in Jerusalem. Whether or not you agree or find it plausible has no bearing on it being a messianic prophecy.

While there are a lot ideas about what must happen in order for him to appear, nothing is solid. Some believe that a person with the potential to be the messiah is born into every generation, just waiting for the time to come forward. But I don't know of any one who is actively waiting on the messiah to appear. There's an old saying that is credited to a student of Hillel: “If you are planting a tree and you hear that Messiah has come, finish planting the tree, then go and inquire.”

OK, thanks for clearing that up.

Based on the way you worded that, it sounds like certain things must happen before the messiah will appear.

Are these "ideas" derived from written words in the Jewish Bible or are they ideas that have developed during thousands of years of Jewish culture?

They fall into both categories. Much of our messianic prophecy comes from the prophetic books (such as Isaiah, Ezekiel, Amos, and Joel), and is expanded on in the Talmud. What events will precede the messiah has been a very popular topic throughout the centuries, and many of our sages and scholars have added their thoughts to it.

What events do you think will probably precede the coming of the messiah?

From time to time, I see someone on TV claiming the messiah is coming soon because the world is going to hell in a handbasket. In other words, they think terrible things will happen just before the messiah comes.

Are Jewish beliefs similar? Do you think bad events will signal that the messiah is about to appear, or do you think it will be a benign event, like a polka dot sunset or something?

Some think it will get to the breaking point. Others say that it will be when children have absolutely no respect for their parents. Or that society must be "middle of the road so to speak", not too bad, but not too good either. Or that Israel (meaning the Jewish people) must completely observe a Shabbat. Or that he will appear at a given time, and that's that (but, even then, some say that extreme acts of righteous can hurry it along). And the list goes on and on.

Personally, I don't worry about it. As a Jew, my "job" is to follow Torah and work towards "tikkun olam", which means healing the world. So that is what I'll do. And if it aids in bring about the messiah, then all the better.

Why do so many jews push for diversity on all non jews, yet marry only jews?
Is it not true that you can only be jewish if your mother was jewish? And is'nt she to marry a jewish man?

Did not your God tell you that only He will bring peace to the world, not jews?

Why do so many jews work in the evil and sins of the entertainment world? And most are liberals and athiest and defend the lifestyles G-d hates?

JB, that was a very interesting answer! Very different opinions.

Some people think the messiah will come after bad things happen (children lose respect for their parents), others when pretty much nothing happens (middle of the road society), and others when very good things happen (extreme acts of righteous). What a range of opinions!

What exactly does that mean?

I'm not really sure how to explain in any more detail. It means that the Jewish people, as a whole, observes Shabbat in accordance with Jewish law.
