So do most Jews celebrate January 1st as a new year and do you personally celebrate it?
No significance whatsoever for me. Although I must admit that I don't complain that I get the day off from work. I plan to be in bed early enough tonight to ensure I'm not tired at Shacharis tomorrow morning.
I grew up a secular gentile, so old habits are hard to lose. It's no longer a major celebration, though. We are watching TV tonight and having guacamole.
And when someone wishes me a happy 2014, I secretly think now, "You're wrong. It's not 2014 at all". They mean well, though.
I'm a fairly low key person, so a lot of the celebration parts of New Year makes me anxious. You'd never catch me in Times Square, for instance. It's also my birthday which means I can pretty much never go out to dinner on my birthday, which is a total bummer! I really end up celebrating my half birthday because it's just easier to do!
But as I've said before in this forum, I do like reasons to celebrate, even if they are not necessarily part of my faith tradition. I'll be happy to celebrate the Chinese New Year in a few weeks!
You mean ya all don't consider 2014 a "New Year" or anything ~? We live in a secular world and should recognize it just like the stop light or sign~!
Yes, it is the beginning of a new civil calendar, but what is there to celebrate?
The things that most do on New Years - celebrating with family and friends, reflection on the past year, and hopes and dreams for coming one - we do on Rosh HaShanah.
