Since Israel exists as a country and (most) Jews accept Jerusalem as its capital, isn't it time to retire the word Zionist?

If you did, how would you describe Theodore Herzl?

My answer is no.

He would always have his place in history since the educated Ashkenazi Zionists from Western Europe were the ones who were able to create a working government. But they were the minority compared to 1M plus Sephardic/Mizrahi Jews that already lived there and arrived after the 1949 Armistice. Can't they simply be called Israelists now. (Russia/China are no longer called Socialists nor Communists ).

The question is open ended BTW, so an explanation for an answer would be helpful in this intended discussion.

I'm pretty sure Chinese are still called Communists… The ruling party is called the Communist Party of China.

Anyways, to answer your question, I would not refer to any modern day person as a "Zionist" because the goal has been achieved. Herzl, however, certainly would still be called a Zionist because at that point in history, there was no state of Israel.

My father who lives in Israel but was born in the USA just a few days ago referred to himself as a Zionist. So people are still using the term and see it is as a relevant expression of how they feel.

Perhaps as the older generation dies out or as newer generations are born, the term or word or attachment to "Zionism" will fade out or phase out. Only time will tell.

Globally that may be true. But Arabs won't stop using it, since they don't recognize Israel. And Israel won't stop using it until the current political parties with lineage to the Zionist parties are gone and finally stick it in past history in their textbooks.

No, I think Zionism is still valid as both a term and an ideology.

And it will be as long as there are factions in the world who refuse to acknowledge Israel's existence, who deny its right to exist, and who seek to destroy it.

Well not all Arabs think a like or are a monolith. There are many Jews that are anti Zionism. There are many Arabs that having nothing against Zionism.

I think as newer generations are born of any race or ethnic group, the term Zionism or it's concepts will fade out.

I think once the Zionist achieved their goal in the re birth of a Jewish Israeli nation state, that led to the splintering or dismantling of structure of Zionism and it's adherents. Zionism probably doesn't have the same meaning as it had in the wider context.

Perhaps the term Zionism is flawed in it's usage.

But let's not make it seem like it's Arabs that are the ones or the only ones that won't stop using it. Many Jews and other groups of people are holding on to the term Zionism too as well. So it goes both ways and in all directions.
