Do mainly only ultra orthodox teach it to their kids? Also, what's the point? Why not just learn Modern Hebrew?

As far as I know, the Jews don't have any kind of relevant connection to modern Hebrew. For Ashkenazi, Yiddish is simply the language we've spoken for many generations.

Your question is kind of like asking why do Mexicans speak Spanish.

Have a gut shabbes and a freilichen Purim.

Yes. To separate themselves from others.

A little history of Yiddish

4.* Development of Yiddish over the Ages

FWIW Using Spanish is a bad comparison to use for Mexicans. A better comparison would have been Nahuatl.

My point is that inferring that a group of people should be speaking a language that is not the language of their heritage, is well, not so nice.

So maybe poor blacks shouldn't speak "Black English?" Mexicans should speak like Spaniards? And Ashkenazi Jews should speak "Modern Hebrew" and forget their native tongue of Yiddish?

It just doesn't make sense.

Exactly what Hashem and Chazal asks of us Jews. We are not meant to assimilate with the goyim. There's lots of room in the tent with those who guard the Torah. Come join us.

The Hassidic/Ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel speak Yiddish as their belief is that Hebrew should be only used for holy purposes except in situations where there is no other choice (meaning they have to communicate with someone who doesn't speak Yiddish and only speaks Hebrew).

Yeah I don't know many "native" Spanish speakers that are not first or second generation.
