Really. She probably had a request to be cremated long before she died. Being cremated after death is a huge difference from being burned alive. It was probably her choice, put into writing well before she died.

Under Halachah it would have been up to the children to bury her and not cremate her even if she had a request in writing. But this is the US. so its doubtful that her children would've. IMPOV the US, more than any other country, seems to be going through the motions of Halachah (traditions) without actually fully following them.

If you're talking Halacha...

Cremation is against halacha. So if a Jewish person requests cremation, his/her children may not honor that request and must follow halacha by giving him/her a proper Jewish burial, no difference the price. If money needs to be raised, you raise it. There is no shiva sat, nor kaddish said for somebody who was cremated upon request.

I bet Joan Rivers regrets her decision now.

Various translations of this verse:
Leviticus 19:28 "'Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.

I never got the impression that she was very traditional. My father was Jewish (not religious at all) and always insisted he wanted to be cremated. We buried him instead. I actually feel some guilt by not following though with cremation.

Rosh Hashanah? I'm not very educated on the Jewish religion, but I was under the impression that the judgment was based on mankind, not individuals.

Rosh Hashana is for the living. She met her maker.
