Tonight is one of my favorite times to be on a college campus. Hillel has collected hundreds of menorahs over the years so in addition to the community menorah lighting, any student who wishes to light the menorah but does not have their own can do so together. Not to mention that people of all religions come to listen to the rabbi's talk before the candle lighting. It's a great time to be a staff member - and nice that I don't have to rush home early from work! Particularly looking forward to some jelly donuts tonight.
Very excited! Made some cookies and sufganiyot for my co-workers, where I'll be lighting the first nights candles.
Got some halvah setting in the oven, latkes tomorrow! YUM.
Sufganiyot! Oh how I miss my Sephardic neighbors back in NYC and their fabulous homemade donuts!
Concerning the Christmas/Hanukkah business referenced above:
I was at least 7, maybe 8, before I found out a menorah is not a Christmas decoration. And that was only because I asked why we did not put one in the window like some other people.
I once got a holiday card from a Jewish friend - a reindeer with nine Christmas tree lights on his antlers.
When I was a kid the local 'candy store' (remember them?) was run by a Jewish couple. They put Christmas lights around the front window in December. I once asked them why. The answer - totally straight-faced - "So Santa knows to stop here".

Homemade halvah! You're making me drool. I still wish I had brought back more halva from Israel - the apricot variety was heavenly. There's an Armenian shop a few towns over where I can pick up regular, chocolate, and pistachio but nothing more unique and they're often out of fresh.
Would you mind sharing a recipe? I've never tried to make it at home - it never even occurred to me!
It's pretty simple, but I have yet to see how it set or how it tastes yet, so I'll report back with results tomorrow when I cut it.
I did 4 cups of honey and 4 cups of Tachina, 2 tsp of vanilla extract. I don't do nuts so I did not include. Bring honey to soft ball stage (about 240 degrees), then bring in a sep pot the Tachina to 120 degrees. Let the honey cool a bit, add the vanilla extract and fold the Tachina into the Honey. Mix for 10 minutes. Pour mixture into a lightly greased 8x8 pan, cover, an refrigerate for at least 24-36 hours.
Just tried it, it is more like a sesame toffee candy than what I would want out of halvah.
RE: TFF, like being Zionist is a bad thing.
