Since it popped up on my July calendar I decided to post that the fast of the 17th (which is actually the 18th this year) of Tammuz is coming up on July 24, 2016. The Seventeenth of Tammuz is a Jewish fast day commemorating the breach of the walls of Jerusalem before the destruction of the Second Temple. It falls on the 17th day of the Hebrew month of Tammuz and marks the beginning of the three-week mourning period leading up to Tisha B'Av. Like other minor fasts, Tzom Tammuz begins at dawn (first light) and ends at nightfall (full dark).

Thanks. Now that I work for a Chasidic boss in a Chasidic neighborhood, I do like to be aware of such things, out of respect.

I find this fast to be second toughest of the 7 fasts we Jews observe during the year. Sunset comes late and it's usually really hot out. When it's a pushed off fast, like it is this year, there's more flexibility to break the fast if you are struggling (of course with the consult of a qualified Orthodox rabbi). B'h, I'm a good faster. But my wife and oldest son typically struggle.

Best thing to do is check out Chabad every once in a while, and it is really cool in that it will tell you what happened on certain days. I couldn't live without Chabad, besides that, there are really a whole lot of stories there if you are looking at certain scripture and want to see what the ancients say about things. You should go to chabad and calculate the day you were born on God's calendar. I was born on the 7th of Tevet.
