AFAIK, currently, Dat simply means religion. Dati means religious. In the piyut of Eleh Ezkerah there is reference to Dat Yomayim, the Torah, a 2000 year old law. The word appears 4 times in the Scroll of Esther, meaning "law". In Deut 33:2 it is part of the compound word eshdat, referring to a "fiery law." It is also in Daniel, 616 as "law."

I'll ask my rabbi next weekend.
I definitely remember reading or hearing somewhere that "knowledge" was the original derivation of "religious" in the Jewish context. In the same sense that in western society, we use the word "faith" as synonymous with "religion" because Christianity glorifies faith, Judaism glorifies "knowing" that it is the truth. (I wouldn't have dreamed it up myself because my Hebrew isn't that good.) I'll see what my local rabbi has to say...
Ha! I was thinking of a panty -girdle, but that's just me...
