I am not a Jew. But I do try to understand ancient Judaism for the purposes of my Christian Faith. Recently, I have seen studied the counting of the Omer and see many site saying to count this from the 16th.

I find that is in error and noticed that the Dead Sea Scrolls record a point from which I have found it should be counted which is from the day after the Sabbath that follows the First Fruits.

In other words, I see:

16 - Waving of the Barley - second day of the week
22nd - Weekly Sabbath
23rd - Begin count of Omer

---- 3rd month - 15th day - Shavuot

So why the change?

Those were a great read. I read both of them. I see where the confusion comes from indeed.

The way I understand it is still a bit changing.

I see that the 16th of the First month was the Feast of Firstfruits. I think they must have then started counting the day following the Sabbath (that followed Firstfruits). That would put it at the 23rd.

Then if they count 7 weeks they would land on 15th day of the 3rd month but then they are to add a day which would put them on the 16th of the 3rd month. So Feast of Barley firstfruits would have been on 1/16 and Feast of Wheat firstfruits on 3/16.
