I've always checked "white." Never even gave it a second thought.

I check "white" and look white, I even have light grey eyes. My family comes from Russia/Poland/Lithuania. Took a DNA test and I am majority ashkenazi, with my Y-chromosome traced to middle east. I think technically people from middle east are "white" according to the census.

Interesting post, but to me, at least, it raises many issues. First off, it is very hard for me to make any sense from the census; technically, I think it is a farce, a political show, and more crooked than most things the federal government is involved in. Hispanic? Is that a race? Asian? Is that an ethnic group? As noted above, Cauc/Mong/Negro were the choices in my youth and adolescence. Probably none really apply to me.

In the 18th and 19th centuries by goyische reckoning (literally gentile, from a Jewish perspective), many Americans, but probably not all, and maybe not even a majority, did not regard Jews as White. Probably fewer Europeans regarded us as of their "race."

My grandparents are "Ashkenazim," my father's side (Leviim) from Galicia, and my mother's side from Ukraine. I have grey eyes, also, but I do not look at all like my WASP friends, and was easily spotted as a Jew by an Egyptian in Cairo.

In my old age, I remind myself that I am almost White, and need to watch out for the sun. Arabs and Jews both used tallises not just for protection against the cold. Other than that, AFAIK I am just Jewish, all the way back. The US census, changing from decade to decade, does not always have a good name for that, and anyway, as others have indicated above, "Jewish" signifies not a race, but a nation, indivisible, under G-d, with opinions and argument for all.
