I'm going to Israel in July. A co-worker was asking me about my trip, and a young girl (20's) smiled at me and sweetly asked, "Are you going on a mission trip"?

I just returned her smile and said, "I'm going because I'm Jewish, and we don't do mission trips." Then I went to go silently bang my head against a wall.

laugh AND cry....

You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.

She probably was not saying this to aggravate you. She genuinely does not know anything about it. I'm not getting onto you. I just think of these things as opportunities to enlighten people. I too have been asked some real doozies.

Do you speak Muslim ?

Did you not know we are at war with Israel ? ( I was wearing an Israel defense shirt with flag )

What is most important in these situations is answering them in way that does not cause them embarrassment. Just calmly explain it.

I kind of thought that's what I did.

Many years ago, I was working in a school outside of Boston. I told one of my co-workers that I was going to Israel on my honeymoon. She was overwhelmed -- she pointed out how exotic that was. I, of course, just thought of it as a regular place to go and hang out in, but outside that bubble of Jewish thought, the idea of taking an 11 hour plane ride to visit someplace so foreign is a weird thing.

I think that many people are not exposed to what we see as common place so they (if they can at all) contextualize through their own lens. For some, the idea of a trip to Israel makes no sense unless it is as a church (or even synagogue or a PAC) mission -- that is, an organized trip to advance that particular theological (or sometimes political) position, even internally. I don't think that "mission" here was about missionizing, but about going as an extension of an organization and to many, that's the only way that they would get to go.

The sad thing about this is that there are groups of evangelical Christians who go to Israel on mission trips in order to attempt to convert Jews. I gather it's a real problem.

No idea. I just searched for a goofy pic to fit the words I had in mind. And then I made the meme.

@Shalhevet: Use packing cubes when you pack for your trip! I use them when I go abroad and they're fantastic for organizing your stuff. You can also fit more clothes in your suitcase with packing cubes -- and even get away with just bringing carry-on luggage for the flight.
