My family is moving to overland park from washington state, what is this im seeing about a 1% tax if you live in kansas and work in missouri? I read thru the tax stuff but missed that. Also i have a son who will be attending high school, i was looking and Blue Valley West i thought was the best but it looks like im seeing that north or northwest is the place to be? Is there a nicer town with good schools closer to St. Joes?

The tax only applies to the city of Kansas City, Missouri, not to any other town in Missouri. If you work in KC, you pay the tax. If you live in KC, you pay they tax. Otherwise, it does not apply to you at all.

Was that St. Joseph Missouri you want to be close to? If so, I'd scratch OP. That's a doosey of a commute. I'd either just live in St. Joe or at least in Platte County, where the schools are excellent, and the commute would be half that of OP.

We moved here from Illinois about 20 years ago. I wanted to move to Missouri because of the beautiful older neighborhoods but NO ONE recommended the kcmo school district. (Thank God!!) We sent our kids to Shawnee Mission South HS and are so happy we did. Both of our kids received a quality education and went on to great careers. Although I live in an 'older' part of Jo Co (our home was built in '69) I absolutley love these burbs. Jo Co is a well planned area, great schools, great resturaunts, great service, and friendly people. I worked in the city for about 15 years and it was always great coming home from work. We live behind Oak Park Mall in the Oak Park Subdivision.

You must REALLY want to live in OP! That's like an hour and 20minutes, minimum each way, any sort of traffic problems and you could easily be well over 1.5 hours.

I would look at the I-29 corridor of Platte County (nice suburban area with great schools). But hey, if OP is what you want, go for it. .

You can make it in less than an hour. Don't let kcmo scare you.

Welcome! My preference was BV North for a HS, but all of the Blue Valley schools are excellent and the district is very highly regarded as is Shawnee Mission district.

I know someone that lives on the south side of St. Joe and drives to the OP area. They say it's a little over an hour.
I guess if you drove 95 you could pull it off.

Schools in northern parts of the metro are comparable to Johnson County.

Google maps from the center of OP to the center of St. Joe says an hour and 10 minutes. I've been there many times in under an hour and I'm not a speed demon.

If I had to commute to St. Joe for work, I would still send my kids to JoCo Schools. That's just me though. The OP should check things out for herself and her family.

I've driven from Mission to St. Joe several times and it is about an hour and 10 to 15 minutes and I drive rather fast on the highway.

No way in hell would I live in JoCo if I was working in St. Joe. I would be living in Platte County. I think living in JoCo and working in St. Joe is foolish unless you have a very good reason.

Revenue Division 3

Liberty, MO or Parkville would be your best bet for good schools up North and an easier commute to St. Joseph. Even then you'll have a 30 min commute if you abide by the speed limits (I-29 @ St. Joe is a speed trap). You may still be subject to the KCMO earnings tax in Parkville depending on exactly where you live. It will be worth verifying before writing an offer on a home.
