If hired it would be for the city of KCMO. I guess it would be wherever the government building is located. Its a civil service position within the technology department.

You will have to live in the city of KCMO then as KCMO has a residency requirement.

I would live in the Northland. There are express routes from the Northland along the I-29 corridor in Platte County. Schools will be great and it's a nice suburban area in the city limits of KCMO.

Another option would be the Shoal Creek area in Clay County (also the Northland) where you can catch the Liberty Express via I-35.

Commuting to Downtown from the Northland is very easy. You can get downtown in 15-20 minutes from any part of the Northland even during rush hour. KC is loaded with uncongested highways, so you can see why transit is non-existent.

Check out anything in the I-29 corridor between KCI airport and Downtown KC. I think you will find something you like in that corridor.

Yeah, the northland would be the best option and it's where most city employees live who have children. The northland is very suburban even though its apart of KCMO

The Northland refers to the part of KC that's north of the Missouri River, which is north of Downtown and bisects the metro area into "north of the river" and "south of the river". Besides looking there you might check out the more urban, but very kid-friendly, Brookside, a neighborhood developed from the 19-teens through the 1930's. You're right about the public school problems in the city, but Brookside (my neighborhood) is FULL of kids so people have found ways to manage using parochial, charter schools, etc. It's a direct bus run from Brookside to Downtown and doesn't take too long, especially on the MAX route which has limited stops. Also, if you find a house near the Brookside shopping district you can easily take care of daily errands (grocery, drugstore, P.O., dry cleaner, coffee shop, restaurants, etc) without needing a car!

cool beans. I've seen Brookside mentioned a few times on this board. Hopefully finding a good school won't be an issue.

If you can take the time to make the school situation work, I highly recommend Brookside. I don't have kids, but a co-worker sends her kid to a charter (free!) Montessori school in Brookside -- there was paperwork and bureauocracy and a lottery, but it can be done, and in my mind the community is 100% worth it if walkability and community are important to you.
