A bank or S&L is about the last thing I would've guessed that to have been

There was a drug store inside the First National Bank building on the corner of Lexington and Liberty. Not sure which one that was. I think the entrance was on S Liberty but one could also enter from inside the bank building. There were a number of doctors on floors 2 through 5 of the bank building as well as other offices, including State Farm insurance, I think.

Also, I am thinking that the same First National Bank building on the south side of the square, Bundschu Department store on the east side of the square, and perhaps the Jones Store on the west side of the square were the only buildings to have passenger elevators. And, I think all of the elevators required a person to man and operate. Jones Store also had an escalator.

I just checked Google Maps and the Liberty Street entrance to the drug store has been built over.

Oh that's plenty, Doc, thanks. Enough to see what used to be there. Sigh, what economic waste so much of The Square has become.

That building was too "new" so it made me curious what was there before. I went back to 1946 and couldn't find a 310 WL address, but I cant imagine that part of town having a parking lot back then. Blue Valley S&L was at 206 N. Liberty at one time, so I suspect whatever was there was torn down to make room for this "modern" building. If so, based on the other pics of that era we've seen, that whatever was there might have been one of the first of the original buildings to be demolished.

Ok got it, duhhhh......300 WL was the USPO . .so when that classic was torn down (those jerks) BVSL built on the site. Next up was the Paul Luff Restaurant at 320.
