Definitely not in the Memorial Building. Go back and fine tune your first response.

To clarify, I'm looking for the name of the building and the name or usage of the room.

Another view of the same room...

What room of which building was this taken in?

Perhaps I was being too particular. Your answer is not wrong, but it is incomplete. This is the girl's gym, located in the annex portion of the old William Chrisman on Maple.

I took basic basketball lessons in that girl's gym in 1952 when I was a sixth grader at McCoy school. The instruction was for sixth graders everywhere in the Independence School district. I went several times but it was a chore getting there by myself on Saturday mornings and I eventually quit going.

Why it was the girl's gym for us I do not know but we arrived through that small east door and then took our instruction in street clothes and tennis shoes and then left through the same small east side door. Did not make use of the lockers.

I spent three years in this school, but for some unknown reason was never invited into that room. I took the photos many years later, when the church that now owns the building had an open house. I think that was in the late 1980s.

There is a lot of excitement centered around the Truman Sports Complex. However, before the stadiums were built a different sort of excitement happened there. What tragic event in Independence had a major connection to that area?

Only about one-third of the complex is in Independence, isn't it?

You got me, but did the tragedy involve children?
