That Gilpin was a rather busy fellow. Besides all of the named activities so far, he also took time to be a bodyguard for a rather well known individual. For twenty snowflakes name the guarded party.

The same fellow who appointed him as governor of Colorado. You scratch my back, I will scratch yours sort of thing.

This map shows the one time city limits of Independence extending to the middle of the Missouri River. It also shows the track layout for the Independence and Missouri River RR heading to the square.

The previous picture posted of the Gilpin Town Hall is shown along River Blvd just north of Silver Lake Road. The building is a former school.

Too bad the city de-annexed. This shows the city limits existing in 1857, I don't know that I have ever heard the year of de-annexation.

Gilpin was also responsible for a certain Federal Government agency placing an office in Independence. Which agency was that?

I was in Colorado Springs about mid-June of 1966.

That summer vacation was in 1960, remember it very well. We stopped at the US Mint in Denver (Dad and I were avid coin collectors) on our way to the big national rodeo in Wyoming (Cheyenne?) My only recollection was a performer was killed on the track when he fell and a horses-drawn wagon rolled over him. Might still have the newspaper from the day after reporting the event as the main headline.

Long trip home thru Nebraska

My error. I thought you had said you were there in 1966. I drove across southern Nebraska until we turned to go to Denver. That was virtually all the way across Nebraska. Boooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrring!

Oops! That was WCHS. Nevermind.
