Although I never had a connection to that building I always go by there when I am in town. There is a structure of sort that is still there, though, from when this photo was taken.

Uh, where is it?

This, I think is the area in question. If it is, I have no idea what the building was.

I will still let someone else answer this one. However, I just noticed a "trick" in the question.

The purpose of this building in 1957 can best be described as General Purpose.

The building lost its main purpose in 1953 when that main purpose was moved .35 miles away. The replacement building bears no resemblance to the original building and is still going strong.

That ought to help?

Corner of E Kansas & Hocker; newer structures, older retaining wall. Did the replacement structure(s) move east?

That retaining wall was there when I was a youngster and was probably put there when the now razed building was built.

You could not find the replacement if you followed Kansas east.

A wider view allows you to see the replacement building, which is much larger than the previous due to an "outbreak" that lasted about 15 years.

For extra credit give the common name for that "outbreak".

I could make an "educated" guess about the building now, but more of an uncertain guess on the common name.

Ok, ok....The building in the first photo is the Thomas Hart Benton elementary school, containing 8 class rooms. This building was condemned in 1951 and replaced by a new school building located on S. Leslie. It was enlarged in 1964 because of increasing enrollment due to, wait for it, the "baby-boom".
