I may be moving to Independence, MO. Where is the crime the worst? Is it like St. Louis where there are neighborhoods to avoid but there are still plenty of safe places?

Haven't lived there for a while, but one of the worst areas was along 24 hiway in the NW part of town. And near Van Horn.

I've only lived here 50+ years. The NW area has quieted down greatly in recent years, in large part due to the change of school districts for that part of town. There aren't any neighborhoods I'm afraid, or even hesitant to visit.

An option for you as you check various possible homes is to check that area for past crimes using this link...

LexisNexis® Community Crime Map

I also suggest "driving" the area via Google Maps Street View. In general you'll find Independence to be a decent place to live, with lots of historic sites and strong community pride.

It's always been the North side of the city which has some of the poorest areas in all of metro KC. One of the worst areas is the large hawthorn section 8 apartment complex near 291 and Hwy 24. Most of independence is really not that bad, even the north parts. Northern Independence is more run down than crime ridden. It's just a very working class suburb. Much of the city is lower income or modest, but still stable and well kept. The Southeast part of the city where it borders Lee's Summit and Blue Springs is more affluent.

I've lived in Indep since 2011. It's honestly not bad and very quiet. Of course, there are old stereotypes that Indep earned but for the most part its okay. Like others have said. The northside of town is a little more run down. Basically when you drive north to side the houses get better. If there's an area I would avoid it's anything bordering Sugar Creek. lol
