It was all torn down, when I moved to town, though the Sprint Center wasn't completely built yet (2007). I do know that the original Danny Edwards BBQ was one of the building casualties on the 12th and Grand block. Now it exists on Southwest.

Just a UMB drive through bank. The rest was surface parking. That was all that was torn down for the Sprint Center.

Several structures were torn down unnecessarily just north of the sprint center and is now just surface parking lots. The biggest loss there was the Law Building which was torn down for no reason at all. It was slated to become loft apartments and then was abruptly torn down.

The P&L District was also mostly surface parking lots and vacant or underused structures. There were some haunted houses etc. Even the parking lots were barley used. But the P&L district effected a larger area. KC did lose the TWA building, but nothing else was worth saving and the project actually renovated the Midland and Mainstreet Theaters.

The vacant Jones Store was torn down too.

The Power and Light District replaced a massive decaying hole in the heart of downtown KCMO. It was worth every single penny the city has spent on it.

There were actually a few things torn down including a few small businesses and that were never able to get their footing anywhere else. I mean it was an necessary evil but it is sad to see some small businesses go out like that.

Well not for no reason I suppose, this is there now:

KANSAS CITY ,MO - Google Maps

But many thought (myself included) that it should have been restored and incorporated into the project (P&L District).

What is there now is just a 1-2 story retail building and the old TWA building could have been gutted so the same retail could be built at ground level, while the upper floors could have been converted to residential. That building should not have been destroyed. It was historic and had a story behind it. Many buildings in much worse shape have been renovated. A much more dense project should have gone in it's place anyway. That was a waste of a great urban location for a high density mixed use project. They tore down some others on the same block.

At least something was built there unlike the law building a few blocks away which was in the process of being converted to condos when the city tore it down from under the developers and it's now a surface parking lot. I still think somebody got paid for that deal to provide parking for Sprint Center. Crazy how much has been destroyed in KC when there is already tons of land that can be built on (where buildings like this have already been torn down).

Law Building:

rendering of law building (building next door was also torn down for surface parking.)

Maybe you will see this post before May of 2014 .

These aren't fantastic pictures, being taken from SD Beta tape, but this is what the early demolition looked like in April 2005.
