My husband is a German (while I am Good ol' American). We plan on moving to KC in a few months. Is there any place that has a Germany feel to it. Like a bakery or butcher shop or resturant? I think that it is so sweet that he is moving his whole life for me so that I can live near my family. I want him to still feel like he can kinda have a piece of home in KC too. Thanks for your help.

Wink Hermann, MO!

Well I don't know about the Kansas City metro area (I was born and raised in the St. Louis area), but if you go from KC and drive about 2/3 of the way to St. Louis, there is a wonderful town on the Missouri River called Hermann. You'd take I-70 and exit at Highway 19 (New Florence/Montgomery City) and head south. As soon as you cross the Missouri River, you're there! Check out Historic Hermann, MO, Heart of Missouri Wine Country for more info on this town that will make you and your husband think you're in old Germany! My wife and I are just crazy about it. Great wineries (I really recommend Stone Hill's Steinberg White and Hermannhof's White Lady of Starkenburg) with live German band music (we got to hear some of it at Hermannhof Winery), St. George Catholic Church up on top of a steep hill in town, and everyone we encountered was very friendly and down-to-earth. It's a great town to just get out of the car and walk around. Once you're settled, either make a day trip there; or better yet, stay at one of Hermann's bed and breakfasts.

If you and your husband would like to visit a wonderful outdoor Catholic shrine, the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows is a short distance away from Hermann on the north side of the Missouri River, in the village of Starkenburg. Website: Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows, Starkenburg, MO.
