Default "The Airport That's Closest to Town"....

This should be very interesting to anybody interested in KC's aviation history, start on page 43.

Fascinating.

This article prompted me to research further into KCI's history and, in doing so, I found that for nearly 40 years I have been under a false assumption. That being that KCI was brand new and newly built in the early 70s. Little did I know that Mid-Continent Airport had been there since the mid-50s and later upgraded.

My first visit to Kansas City was in February 1972 and I vividly remember driving east on I-70 just north of downtown and looking to my left to see a beehive of jet airliner activity right across the river at Municipal. I guess it was later that same year that they moved operations to KCI. Today it is hard to imagine in that space, but back then it was a full-blown commercial airport bustling with jet airliners.

But even after the move, Municipal still hosted an occasional big jet. Air Force One carrying Gerald Ford to the 1976 Republican convention landed at Municipal and I remember that carried live by local TV, showing it on final approach over midtown/downtown. Of course, back then AF1 was a 707.
